The Registers in the present volume have been tran- scribed by the Rev. J. Harvey Bloom, Rector of Whitchurch, near Stratford-upon-Avon, the Rev. W. Symonds, late Vicar of Frocester, but now of Great Sherston, in Wilts, and the Rev. R. H. M. Bouth, Rector of Elkstone, and to them the Editor desires to tender his best thanks. Thanks are also due to the parish clergy for leave to print the various registers. Their names are mentioned under the several parishes.

As before, this volume is issued without any index. Hereafter the Editor hopes that it will be feasible to issue a general index for the whole county, and thus avoid that great evil — an undue multiplicity of indexes.

The reader must bear in mind that these transcripts are not legal "evidence," and that for certificates the clergy must be applied to.

Volume VII, now in the press, will include the important parish of Cheltenham ; while Painswick will appear in Volume VIII, which is also in the hands of the printer.

The Editor desires to impress upon the reader the fact that it is only volunteer assistance that renders the issue of these Registers possible. He will gladly welcome further help in the work of transcription, especially in the north of the county, and on the west side of Severn.

It may be well to note that since the issue of the last Volume the Marriage Registers printed in this series have been bound separately and sent to the Clergy of the respective parishes " for preservation in the parish chest."

Note. — The Marriages are contained in two volumes. The older is of parchment damaged a little by damp, the other is an ordinary official folio. In the former the entries are intermingled in a very confused way, and at one end are 3 pages of Briets. The title runs : —

The Regster Boke of Christeningis and Weddinges made ffor the Parishe of Bachetorde in the Countie of Gloc. in the iiijth yere of the Raigne of o"^ Soveraigne Ladie Elizabeth de An° Salutis, 1562.

It will be observed that the Register was irregularly kept since between 1596 and i656only seven weddings appear to be recorded.

Marriages at Standish,

1559 to 1812.

Note. — The Standish Marriage entries are contained in four volumes, viz.,

Vol. I, 1559 to 1627 Vol. II, 1654 to 1690 Vol. Ill, 1691 to 1753, also 1763 to 1783 Vol. IV, 1754 to 1812. There is a double register ot Marriages tor most of the years from 1763 to 1783 in Vols. Ill and IV, the entries in the former being written by the Clerk, in the latter by the Vicar. There are two large gaps in the Marriage Register, viz., from 1609

to 1621, and Irom 1628 to 1653, for which years no entries occur. Besides these important omissions, the entries are wanting for the following years :

Vol. I, 1561, 1565-6, 1570, 1580, 1586, 1588, 1593, 1596, 1603-4. Vol. II, 1 66 1, 1 68 1, 1683-4.* Vol. Ill and IV, 1765 and 1767. The entries from 1559 to 1578 are dated by the regnal years of Elizabeth only; the order of some of these entries is irregular. Queen Elizabeth's reign began, it is well to remember, on 17th November, so that every year of her reign runs from the 17th of November to the i6th ol the following November. From 1578 the years ot our Lord are given. The following transcript has been collated with the extracts from the Bishop's transcripts at Gloucester. Marriage entries marked with an asterisk are from the Bishop's transcripts only. A large number ot the Marriage entries are of people belonging to Randwick, Saul, and Hardwick. To the two former Standish is the Mother Parish, and the latter is ecclesiastically united to it. The Marriage entries are mixed up with the Burials and Baptisms for most of the years from 1622 to 1754, a fact which has greatly added to the labour of transcription, and also to the risk of omissions. These Marriages have been extracted by the Rev. W. Symonds, vicar of Frocester, and are now printed under his supervision by permission of the Rev. Alexander Nash, M.A., vicar of Standish.

* The Rev. Edwin Pitt, Minister of Standish, died in Feb. 1684, and was buried on 6th of that month.

Marriages at Quinton,

2 Edward VI [1548] to 1812.

Note. — The Register books of this Parish form an interesting series. The Marriages are contained in five volumes. The oldest of these is of parchment, in a flexible bindmg, and consists of 68^ leaves, measuring 13 by 8.5 inches. It is very beautifully written in the handwriting ot Henry Hornby, Vicar 1 538-1634. The gaps are very few, and the entries in English. They include several docu- ments, including more than one licence to eat meat in Lent. Records ot the rehanging and recasting of the bells in 1621, releading the "centre ile" 1624, other repairs to roof and windows 1629, and copies of a deed of Dorothy, Abbess of Powliesworth, giving particulars of the building and enfeofment of the Vicarage house, ^emp. Henry VI and another deed relating to certain church lands in the common fields, dated i June 1628.

Volume II is, like the above, a parchment book in a flexible binding, and consists of eighteen leaves, measuring 12.5 by 7.75 inches. The leaves are many of them loose, but otherwise it is in good condition, though in places the ink has faded.

Volume III is, like the last, of parchment, and contains the Marriages from 1705-41. It has 26 leaves and two small portions ot leaves, and measures 14 by 6 inches. The handwriting is in places peculiar, and here and there much faded.

Volume IV is, like the last, of parchment, and also resembles it in having a stiff cover. It contains but few Marriages, 1742-54.

Volumes V and VI are official folios, of paper.

The manors, hamlets, etc., of Quinton Parish are Admington, Meon, Over and Nether Quinton, and Radbrooke, all ot which will be found mentioned in the Register.
